According to the latest statistics released by the Japanese Ministry of Justice, in 2010 the total number of individuals who applied for refugee status was 1,202. This is 186 less than in 2009. Applicants came from over 51 countries.

In 2010, only 39 out of 1202 total applicants were granted refugee status.
363 were permitted to stay on humanitarian grounds.

Burmese refugees accounted for 356, or 87% of total granted visas (refugee status and humanitarian grounds).
